Keep Bunaken Special Campaign.

Bunaken national park:  has long been world renowned as being at the epicentre of the worlds marine biodiversity.   The “Keep Bunaken Special” campaign has been started in an attempt to keep it that way, amidst increasing pressure on the local environment, due to increased tourism and development in nearby Manado.

We hope the September 25th Beach and Reef Cleanup will be the first successful event of many to come.
The coming together of eight dive centers from the area as well kids from the local schools, marks the start of what we hope will be a very bright future for this precious yet fragile ecosystem.

“ Keep Bunaken Special”  The REEFsponsibles have joined together with some concerned dive resorts in and around Bunaken Island.  Bunaken is home to more then 2000 species of  coral fish. It has been recognised as a marvel to scientists and marine biologists for many years now.  Since being established as a national park in 1991, many great initiatives have been introduced to protect the local marine environment and some have been a big success.

The principle idea behind the campaign is to highlight the increasing stresses being placed on the local environment and to develop an appreciation for it, before it’s too late.
The beach and reef cleanup held on international cleanup day was a huge success, bringing so many people in the local community together for one very valid cause.

We would like to thank everyone involved and invite everybody to check out  www.keepbunakenspecial.com

Happy Diving Everyone.

Keep Bunaken Special Campaign.

The REEFsponsibles have been based mainly on Bunaken national park since march this year.  We have had a very exciting year so far having dived with Hammerhead sharks and enjoying the vibrant walls and reefs Bunaken has to offer.

We are working in the dive industry here, and brushing up on our Indonesian any chance we get. Whilst our time here as been exciting and fun its also been an education.  We are learning about all the trials and strain even a well established National park like Bunaken goes through.  So working together with the local dive resorts of Bunaken and Manado we have come to the conclusion awareness and prevention is needed to help this magical yet fragile ecosystem here stay as balanced as possible and to minimize human impact.

So here it is the Keep Bunaken Special Campaign, we will be doing all we can here to work alongside the resort managers village heads and marine park authorities. Hopefully the zealous for protection and preservation herein the park, will be what it once was keeping the future of Bunaken Bright.

September 25th is international cleanup day and will be the first of many well publicized here, Join us if you can.

With the state of the global environment being threatened in so many ways, when we get the chance to support and protect a small area of our precious world, we must take the job seriously.  The time for inaction and observation is far gone, now is the time to join together and take a stand.  We must force governments to take notice of the problems we face today, for the sake of diversity for tomorrow.
Encourage those who have the power, to think environment instead of politics.  Think to the future instead of the moment.
As a business operator, lucky enough to see the beauty of the ocean in this extremely diverse and special corner of the world, I cringe to think of the changes that have already taken place in the past years.  What will it be like in my childrens generation?  Will the Manta Ray and  shark be creatures only found in story books from the past?
Please join us in supporting a petition to stop fishing of sharks and rays in Raja Ampat, the most bio-diverse marine Eco system in the world.
Thank you.

REEFsponsibles make the news

The REEFsponsibles have made a commitment to provide eco-friendly, socially responsible, diving holidays in South East Asia.  We encourage visitors to choose operators that favor an approach to tourism that can benefit the communities who live in our favorite scuba diving destinations.  We were recently recognized for our efforts in Canadian Magazine Fusion for our DIY approach to conservation and education.

Read the article below and visit our website to see how you can become involved.
Together we can make responsible travel the only option.

International Earth Day

International Earth Day- April 22nd, 2010

The REEFsponsibles are currently in Bunaken, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

To celebrate Earth Day this year, a beach and underwater cleanup was organized to help clean Liang beach of the rubbish that washes in from the main land in Monado.

This years cleanup was very successful, from a 50m stretch of beach, approximately 15 bags full of rubbish and plastic was removed from the beach and surrounding reef.  The details of the cleanup will be submitted to international organizations who monitor the results of these types of activities.

The REEFsponsibles were happy to have help from the staff and guests from Bastiano's Dive Resort along with guests staying at Froggies Dive Resort.  Take a look at the pictures from our Earth Day activities...everyone couldn't help but play around!

Contact The REEFsponsibles for details on how you can organize your own cleanup events or if you would like to volunteer on one of our projects in South East Asia.
